Winter is the perfect time of year to focus on building up supplies of internal strength and vitality that can be drawn upon for the rest of the year.
|
|
|
According to ancient Oriental medicine, we are in the season of the water element when the energy of the kidneys (adrenals) & bladder are at their peak. The Orientals believed the kidneys to be the storehouse of "jing", our energy or vital force.
In the natural world there is a deep stillness as many animals are in hibernation and plants and trees stand dormant, drawing energy from the earth in preparation for the spring growth spurt. Nature is resting and replenishing. For us humans, rather than doing a cleanse, which is best done in the expansive energy of spring, it’s a good time to top up nutritional reserves to supply energy for the months ahead. Also, this year it is more important than ever to fortify natural defences.

Winter Boosters
|
|
|
Vitamin D is the subject of increasing publicity as it becomes clear that deficiency amongst people living in the northern hemisphere is far more widespread than was previously thought.
Adequate levels of the “sunshine vitamin,” so named because vitamin D3 is dependent on sunlight for its manufacture in the skin, are very important in the winter. Deficiency has been linked with lowered immunity, depression and weak bones.
B complex Vitamins are particularly important for energy production. Since these vitamins are water soluble, they need constant replenishing. Vitamin B5 is particularly needed for making adrenal hormones. Excessive adrenaline production will use up supplies of vitamin B12.
Magnesium stores are depleted by stress and anxiety.
Vitamin C is stored in large quantities in the adrenal glands.
Folic Acid is important for immune function.

Supportive Foods
Eat a wholefood diet with plenty of good quality protein, which is needed for immune function. Ensure a balance between animal (lean meat, oily fish for vitamin D, eggs, cheese) and vegetable (nuts, seeds, beans and lentils) varieties of protein. Regular amounts during the day maintain consistent energy levels. However, a small portion is sufficient – too much protein will cause acidity which is linked to a whole host of chronic health problems.
If you tend to feel the cold, include lightly cooked, roasted or stir fried foods in place of raw. Whilst a fresh juice or salad is highly beneficial, too much raw food in winter cools the body. Viruses thrive in a cold temperature, whilst they find it harder to survive in heat. On the other hand, if you frequently feel excessively hot, then eat more raw food.
Foods that are particularly supportive to the kidneys are seaweed, kidney beans, hot water and dandelion tea. Keep caffeine consumption low as it overstimulates the kidneys.
Improve Digestion
An optimally functioning digestive system, ensures full absorption of nutrients which can be used for energy production and immune function.
Herbs known as digestive bitters help improve digestion and absorption by stimulating the release of digestive enzymes and juices. These are Artichoke, Bitter Orange Peel, Liquorice, Gentian, Cardamom and Ginger. For reflux problems, soothing meadowsweet is the herb of choice.
In case you need reminding, 70% of the immune system is in the gut. So make sure the intestines are regularly populated with beneficial bacteria. Take a concentrated probiotic several times per year in addition to regular live natural yoghurt consumption.

Three Minute Kidney Revitaliser
This short meditation will help restore and conserve energy, avoiding depletion. It can be combined with a dead sea salt or Himalayan crystal salt bath or scrub, both of which are great for the kidneys.
Close your eyes, focus your attention into the area of your lower back, just above waist level. Now visualise drawing up healing light from the ground through your feet and up the back of your legs to your lower back. Imagine a protective sphere of radiant blue light surrounding each kidney and the adrenal gland on top of it. Hold your attention there for a minute or so, mentally focusing on conserving your precious inner energy reserves located in your kidneys. Take a few deep breaths and return to whatever you are doing, refreshed.
